Coaching Certification

Overview

The SLSWCA Academy is the official coaching certification body under the Sri Lanka Street Workout and Calisthenics Association. Its purpose is to establish a recognised standard for calisthenics coaching in Sri Lanka, ensure coaches are qualified, up to date, and connected to a growing national network, and provide the public with a trusted directory of certified coaches.

Certification Structure

There are three levels of certification. Each level must be completed in order — you cannot attempt Level 2 without holding a valid Level 3 certificate, and you cannot attempt Level 1 without holding a valid Level 2 certificate.

Level 3 — Foundation Coach

The entry-level certification. Designed to be accessible and welcoming to anyone already active in calisthenics who wants to start coaching. The focus is heavily practical with minimal theory, so athletes already training can transition into coaching without feeling overwhelmed.

What you will learn:

  • Basic anatomy — the key muscle groups used in calisthenics and how they work
  • Fundamental exercises — from beginner movements up to and including Muscle Up
  • Safety and form — the dos and don’ts of the sport, common mistakes to watch for
  • Injury prevention and basic first aid relevant to calisthenics training
  • Warm up and cool down — how to structure it properly and why it matters
  • Rest and recovery — sleep, rest days, and recognising signs of overtraining
  • Basic nutrition — macronutrients, hydration, eating around training, and what to avoid. Practical and simple, not clinical.
  • Creating a workout plan — how to build a simple training plan for a beginner
  • Goal setting — how to have a basic conversation with an athlete about what they want and set realistic expectations
  • Skill Focus — Handstand and Muscle Up coaching progressions. Every athlete wants to learn these two skills. A Foundation Coach must be able to introduce and teach the foundational steps toward both.

How you are assessed — Viva and Demonstration:

  • Oral question and answer session on the content above
  • Practical demonstration of exercises and coaching cues

Level 2 — Intermediate Coach

For coaches who have gained experience after their Level 3 and are ready to coach more advanced movement and work with athletes training for performance or competition.

What you will learn:

  • Everything covered in Level 3
  • Freestyle calisthenics — movement, flow, creativity, and judging criteria
  • Static holds — flag, planche progressions, front lever, back lever
  • Intermediate nutrition — eating for performance, fuelling for skill training vs strength training, body composition basics, and an introduction to supplementation
  • Programming for intermediate athletes
  • Sports psychology — motivation, mindset, and handling setbacks
  • Communication and coaching style — how to give feedback, correct technique without discouraging, and motivate different personality types
  • Working with different body types and fitness levels — adapting your coaching approach
  • Introduction to competition preparation and coaching athletes in a competitive setting

How you are assessed — Viva, Written Paper, and Practical:

  • Written paper covering theory
  • Oral viva on coaching scenarios and knowledge
  • Practical demonstration and coaching assessment

Level 1 — Master Coach

The highest certification offered by the SLSWCA Academy. For experienced coaches operating at an advanced level, capable of coaching complex skills, weighted training, partner training, and developing other coaches.

What you will learn:

  • Everything covered in Level 2
  • Advanced calisthenics skills and progressions
  • Weighted calisthenics — programming and safety
  • Partner training — structuring partner workouts, spotting techniques, programming for pairs, and using a training partner to accelerate skill development
  • Athlete development and long-term periodisation
  • Coaching other coaches — mentorship and leadership
  • Athlete welfare and safeguarding — particularly important when working with minors
  • Staying current — applying new trends, research, and guidelines in calisthenics
  • The business of coaching — structuring sessions, managing clients, and building a coaching practice

How you are assessed — Comprehensive:

  • Written paper
  • Oral viva
  • Practical coaching assessment
  • Submission of a coaching portfolio or case study based on athletes you have coached

Prerequisites

  • Level 3 — No prerequisites. Open to anyone active in calisthenics.
  • Level 2 — Must hold a valid Level 3 certificate.
  • Level 1 — Must hold a valid Level 2 certificate.

Certification Renewal

All certifications must be renewed every two years. Renewal exists to ensure coaches stay active, remain current with developments in calisthenics, updated guidelines, new training methods, and evolving best practices — and that they have not lost touch with coaching.

The renewal process will involve a short refresher assessment or workshop. Coaches who do not renew by their expiry date will have their certification lapsed and will be removed from the active coach directory until they renew.

What Certified Coaches Receive

  • A printed certificate showing their certification level and validity period
  • A digital license on the SLSWCA website displaying their name, level, and expiry date — visible to the public
  • Official recognition by SLSWCA as a certified calisthenics coach in Sri Lanka
  • A listing in the SLSWCA Coach Directory, where the public, clubs, schools, and organisations can find and contact them

If a coach does not renew before their expiry date, their digital license will reflect the lapsed status and they will no longer appear as an active coach on the platform.

Coach Directory and Referrals

SLSWCA will maintain a public-facing directory of all active certified coaches on the SLSWCA website. When anyone — individuals, clubs, schools, or organisations — approaches SLSWCA looking for a coach, they will be directed to this directory and matched based on certification level and their specific needs.

This gives certified coaches real value beyond the certificate — active referrals and recognition as part of the national calisthenics coaching network in Sri Lanka.

Why This Matters

Sri Lanka currently has no standardised certification for calisthenics coaching. The SLSWCA Academy changes that. It sets a national benchmark, protects athletes from unqualified coaching, and gives serious coaches a clear pathway to grow and be recognised. With SLSWCA’s presence across 16 clubs and counting, this certification carries genuine weight in the local calisthenics community from day one.
